Most WordPress themes use the post featured image to head up your posts — in the single post, in archives and in related-post grids. If you publish video, you probably want a featured video there instead, playing exactly where the featured image would appear. Here’s how to add a featured video in WordPress with VideographyWP.
What is a featured video?
A featured video replaces the featured image in your theme’s templates with an imported video. You manage it from one place per post, and it shows anywhere your theme calls the featured image — including Elementor templates — so you don’t touch template code.
How to set it up
- Edit a post (or any public post type) and paste a YouTube, Vimeo or Dailymotion URL in the VideographyWP box.
- Query the video to import its details, and optionally save its thumbnail as the featured image fallback.
- Set the embed position to Replace featured image.
- Publish. The video now plays wherever your theme shows the featured image.
Keep it fast
Leave lazy load enabled so the post shows a lightweight thumbnail with a play icon until the visitor clicks — your Core Web Vitals stay healthy even on video-heavy archives. You can set the play-icon colour to match your brand.
One look everywhere
If you want every featured video to behave identically across the site, use the global embedding options to lock in aspect ratio, controls and lazy loading. See the full WordPress featured video feature for everything it can do.
